Is My Dust Combustible?
It is up to YOU, the manufacturer, to know the composition of the material(s) you process and all applicable laws. MSDS sheets are a good starting point, but most do not address explosivity. NFPA standards 61, 484, 499, 654 and 664 are helpful resources to learn more about your specific dust.
Ideally, have your dust tested. Many states offer consultation through their Department of Labor’s Division of Occupational Safety eg. www.mass.gov/dos. Private testing labs are also available. Nilfisk does not endorse any specific testing laboratory. OSHA can also provide dust testing.
Who’s at Risk?
In OSHA’s original NEP documentation, they issued a list of industries most at risk for combustible dust hazards. This list is not exhaustive. It is highly advisable that you have your dust tested.
